Webpageyness...
For those of you who are interested, JohnDeChancie.com has a new look, due to yours truly. Honestly, it was a quickie and NOT my best work, but I think it looks nice and thought y'all might wanna pop in and see it. The colors need tweaking, but I like the header style, and the side navigation is a bit retro but I didn't want to make any super major changes and it had side navigation previously.

Oh, it's YOU! Did you get a new lj? Or is this just a secondary account?
yokozukiyokozuki on March 18th, 2007 11:54 pm (UTC)
=D Yes, it's meee~ Well, it was meant to be a secondary account, but I go through periods of being more on it and then shorter periods of being on hakuen again... I've spent more time overall as this one for the last year or so, but I still come back to hakuen pretty often. ^^

Cool!

Let's talk about website updating next time I run into you at lasfs or Coral Cafe or wherever. I think it's about time something be done about mine, in particular.

Maybe tonight will be a good time for me to read thudpucker's chapter, at long last....

I think I can probably do something with that page, yeah. Might I suggest multiple page navigation, preferably above the fold?

Are there any particular colors you'd like?
Matthew B. Tepper: Ducks mallards pair quack greenheadsasimovberlioz on March 19th, 2007 04:17 am (UTC)
Yes, definitely, as long as the whole thing (beginning with the home page) has a sort of off-center feel that is truly "me." Hmmm, some ideas: Ducks here, ducks there, ducks that rotate or flip or quack or something when you click on them (decoys OK, or "real"-looking ducks, or cartoony ones), ducks swimming or waddling or flying, in general a sort of overstuffed, oversaturated "feel" to it. That would be terrific. Experiment on me!

I have in mind the sort of thing where I can just update the text content when I need it, and can expand and split sections as required. I know that when I tell you (in person?) what domain name I bought, your imagination will take wing. Considering I have done precious few updates of some parts of the site in years, I think an overhaul at your gifted hands will inspire me to resume writing stuff for it again.

Color? Blue! Blue! My color is a rich, darker-rather-than-lighter blue. Mallard drake-head green is also good. I don't mind clashing if it's fun.

Does any of this make sense in a silly way? If so, I've put across in words the sort of first impression I'd like to give.

For a lot of interactivity you would need some javascript and you seem pretty proud of not having any. Is this negotiable then?

How and about dark blue and green on white? So it's a more professional feel?

And if you want to be able to update it yourself, how about links to general sections, like ducks, music, etc. and then a list of further links inside that so that you can add at will without rearranging the layout?

Very good ideas, I like them! Do with it as you please, just as long as it looks like a guy's website. And, uh, how shall I say this, animé isn't among my interests (YKIOK,IJNMK).

My remarks about Java and frames were timely when I still actually intended to keep adding to the site myself, but I haven't coded web pages for a living since 1996 (!) and my hobbyist urges have long since moved back to my music-related interests. I'd just be happy to have a new look for the site so I can just concentrate on pouring words into the framework you could so artistically provide.

Oh, and the moving ducks would be for navigation, if that isn't obvious. They would flip or flap or whatever when you moused over them. Again, the domain name will give you a big clue. Let me pick up your tab at Coral this week if you're there and we can talk about it.

Probably can't make Coral until spring break.

Okay. On first read-through, I didn't capture the ".com" and my brain went "*SPROING!!!*" :D

Oh, yeah. So I went to look at the site, viewed the guestbook and ... WTF?

So, you've got Angelina Jolie as a lurker? WOW!!! :> Heck of a fan base there. :)

Oh yes, that too! I gave him a perm and dyed his hair blonde! He also now has a diamond stud in his left ear and is wearing a lime green leisure suit. He looks so delightfully retro!

I met Frank Bonner once. Really. We were both competing in the KKGO "Guest Conductor Competition," and the winner got to conduct the "Star-Spangled Banner" before a performance at the Hollywood Bowl. Neither of us made it to the finals. He seemed like a nice guy, very unlike the character he played.
