Menny Things
1. Due to the fact that I've been slamming icon makers, of course today I will be releasing one of my less artsy sets. Good timing, Fritters. Later will be the rest of the Mystery Men set, which I didn't put as much work into because I didn't want it obvious there was a huge time span inbetween the first and second part, and my skills have evolved since the first set. Make fun of icon makers then release subpar icons. Nice planning.

2. Does anyone know where I can donate to help Central Americans hurt by Hurricane Stan? Not even the Red Cross mentions this, when I've heard the death toll is expected to go higher than Katrina and Rita. Is this information WRONG and they don't need help? If it's true I want to help, but not even the Red Cross mentions this... More info.... Even more info... Why the HELL does the Red Cross not mention this?

3. Kiss free speech goodbye. "Second FBI Raid This Week: Erotic Stories Website Hit, Apparently Over Obscenity". Apparently, if you write erotic stories you should expect the FBI to raid your house while you're out and take every computer related thing you own before bringing up charges against you for obscenity. I feel sorry for all my friends who are Harry Potter shippers. I mean, if you forget to state somewhere in your story that you're writing when the characters are over 18 then you're automatically in danger from an FBI raid. And no, I don't believe in kiddy porn or bestiality or any of the other things mentioned in the story, but where do you draw the line? This is imaginary...

4. Okay, the last two were fucking heavy. Here's something lighter. Every Fanfic Ever Written, passed on to me by thudpucker. I'm amused that some parts are similar to the Generic Fanfic I wrote a while back. (If the Generic Fanfic link at psychosix.com is down again, it's also here.)

1. I still want to see them. I like Mystery Men icons. :)
BTW, what's your personal opinion on my own 3 icons? I made em myself when I first got on LJ and new nothing about icon etiquette. No borders or text or anything, but I think they're clear and well trimmed. The little dragon is intentionally that resolution and trimmed that way because it's actually a small dragonlike alien on the shoulder of a space suit wearing human, and I didn't want that too obvious. I think it turned out well for my first time.

2. It's because when everything's said and done, the Red Cross is actually a corporation, and there's very little money to be made from people in the USA by getting donations for Central America. They don't want that to be obvious, so instead of a small mention, they try to block it from people entirely.

Or, I could be completely wrong.

3. I want the government to butt the hell out. I may not agree with what's in that stuff, but other than keeping access away from impressionable minds, I don't see any reason for the FBI to be involved at all.

Unless a better option reveals itself, I think that online 'questionable material' should have rating systems and parental controls just like television finally has.

4. Didn't you point out this similarity once before? ^_^

1. I'll be releasing the MM icons later. If I thought they totally sucked I wouldn't release them, they're just not my best work. They're actually already up with some princess tutu icons as well at my icon page, I just haven't gotten to the "release post" yet. Planning on releasing the tutu icons tomorrow or the day after. And I personally would probably put a border and your name on your icons, but otherwise they get across what you want and as long as you're happy with them, cool.

2. I'm hoping that's not it. I mean, they do have some info for donating to help the earthquake victims in pakistan on their front page. In any case, I called them on it, in theory they'll respond sometime in the next week.

3. I like the rating idea. The article never states or I couldn't find it if the stories were all hers or if it was a collection, so that's sorta important as well. But if they have a problem with her web site shouldn't they TALK to her first about it? "We believe these stories listed below encourage people to sexually abuse children and would like you to remove them." Not busting into her place when she's not home and stealing her shit. I always wonder if they have pets that get out and get killed in these sort of things, too.

4. I couldn't point out the similarities between my story and the other thing because I'd never seen the other thing before....

1. Who/what is Princess Tutu?

2. I'm a cynic.

3. See why I'm a cynic? They didn't bother being reasonable.

4. I swear I've seen both, and clearly remember someone drawing a comparison, what's not clear is who. I think it was early this past summer.
Fritters: Princess Tutu by Frittersfritters on October 11th, 2005 04:49 am (UTC)
1. Princess Tutu is a fantastic anime. At first glance it's an uber-kawaii magical girl anime. Deeper, though, you'll see it's very much a fantastic fairy tale with many dark thoughtful overtones where nothing is really as it seems. Here's a good page on it ...

http://www.anzwers.org/free/tutu/menu.htm

...although you can see some icons at my icon page of course.

4. It's possible I forgot linking to it. I really don't recall it, though. Huh.
perlee_grace on October 11th, 2005 04:12 am (UTC)
Sounds like the FBI targeted the site for obscenity, not erotica per se. But it sends a chilling message because soon all text-based erotica will become obscene too if the religious reactionaries have their way. I will agree though, parts of the HP fandom are notorious for chan. Any teacher-student pairing will be fair game if this raid stands. Don't know about student-student pairings.

Australia passed very tough laws in the spring regarding text-based chan (essentially, if it doesn't have "literary merit" it's obscene) which almost took down a major fanfic archive that hosted a lot of chan stories. Ironically many of them moved their stuff to an archive that is in the States.

Yep, add my thanks to thudpucker for the Every Fanfic Ever Written link! (snickers) Scary thing is--it's all true.
Fritters: California by Frittersfritters on October 11th, 2005 05:00 am (UTC)
The problem with limiting any textual stories based on merit is who decides what the merit is? In theory I'd think if ANYONE reads it by choice all the way through that they are finding some sort of merit in it. Yeah, I don't think you should post stories of people raping babies or anything, but I would never censor that because otherwise you have to draw a line somewhere. Many people lose their virginity before 18, but does that mean that ANY story where Harry and Hermione do it on the night before her 18th birthday constitutes child porn? Or any adult non-consensual sex fiction, even if it's to make a point about how horrific it is, is illegal? But I'm obviously completely against this FBI raid...

And yeah, that's a fun little link isn't it? I like the Christmas one... "Shut up and string tinsel!"
perlee_grace on October 11th, 2005 05:48 am (UTC)
The "literary merit" has to be something beyond mere titillation--at least those are the new guidelines for that Australian-based archive. But then again, one might consider titillation enough merit for its own sake.

For sure though, carried to the logical end, any story featuring teenagers having sex (including more than a few published books) would be classed obscene. (And then there would be "Lolita.") Dunno if two consenting teenagers would be considered child porn--I'd think the bigger issue would be with chan because of the power imbalance between adult and student.

(Harry and Hermione? Oooh, can we say "ship wars"? *g*)
Fritters: HP gaming by twilightsecretsfritters on October 11th, 2005 06:00 am (UTC)
My point was at that point Harry would be classified an adult, Hermione not, but yeah, the teacher ones when they're still in school is technically kiddie porn. And yeah, Lolita is in theory a classic. My biggest problem with this is where do you draw the line? I've downloaded a few HP stories with teacher/kid, does that mean the government should take my computers away and send me to jail?

Nearly every day, I find more incentive to found my own nation somewhere, and run it like a reasonable, intelligent, and open minded human being, or at least as close to that as I can manage to be. Among other things, I'll not allow any religious reactionaries who try to censor whatever they personally don't like...
perlee_grace on October 12th, 2005 03:00 am (UTC)
Woo hoo! Can I join you?
OwlDragonowldragon1 on October 12th, 2005 04:09 am (UTC)
Most likely. You're not a Darwin award candidate, right? I don't want any of them hanging around. ;)

I think it'd be a great place to live, but the key setback is funding. Any suggstions or ideas?

My 0.02
2) I am so behind on news I didn't know that a Stan even existed. Read the links, sad stuff =/ Let me know if you find a way to donate, I'm interested in doing so.

3) I agree with the above commenter that the site was not raided because of erotica, but because of obscenity. While I'm one of the least prudish people that I know of when it comes to all things erotica...I have a huge problem with sex stories involving children and bestiality, and I don't sympathize with the woman who ran the website. I feel that websites such as hers are condoning such behavior, even if it is only text.

See my response to perlee_grace. I don't condone it either, but A: I don't think it encourages it and B: where do you draw the line?

Re: My 0.02
I don't feel the grouchy icon was necessary =p

1) I feel it encourages it. Obviously those who write and read such stories are getting something out of it, or they wouldn't exist.

2) I agree that it would be difficult to tell where to draw the line...but I think that anything that is illegal in photos/pornography would be a safe bet. As far as I know, feces/urine (while obscene) is considered fetish and is not illegal...therefore, if you get your kicks from reading erotica of that sort - fine. Same goes for BDSM, midget porn, etc.

I'm not an advocate of censorship at all. But when it comes to cases such as these, this is how I feel.

I actually used the wrong icon.

And I can't agree on the encouraging thing. I enjoy the occasional non-con fiction but it sure as hell doesn't mean I want to be raped.
