More potpourri..
My Brain: Ahhh. A chill in the air. The leaves are turning. It's raining. What a lovely autumn.

Retailers and TV: It's Winter.

My Brain: No, it's not. It just barely stopped feeling like summer. It's autumn.

Retailers and TV: No autumn. Winter. Look! See all the snowflakes we've pasted up? Have a Christmas special. WINTER!!

My Brain: But... but... Winter doesn't start until something like December 21st. Technically most of the "Christmas Season" is autumn!

Retailers and TV: No autumn for you! Winter! Go shopping! Watch specials!

My Brain: But... but...

This is why I'm not going to see The Golden Compass.

When realizing both my cat and I have the same problem turning down free food, the following conversation popped into my head...

Me: Uh??

postrophe: Biscuits.

Me: Biscuits??

postrophe: Biscuits.

Me:...I'll be dressed in five minutes.

I don't know about you guys, but I never understand people who give Christmas-related gifts as Christmas presents. "Oh. Yay. Something I can't use for another 11 months. I'll put it away somewhere and hope I can actually find it and remember it in 11 months."

*shrugs* I went to see the Chronicles of Narnia when it came out. It was a television series and novels that I loved as a child. It doesn't make me any less pagan for enjoying a good bit of fiction. I guess I just don't understand why you're going to let the same thing stop you. I don't think Pullman wrote His Dark Materials to subvert children into hating Jesus (which are some radical claims from radical Christians), but I also haven't read his series yet. If he wrote a great piece of art, why not enjoy it for precisely what it is?

He apparently has pagans in his stuff too. Wonder what he says about Them...

Whatever one man's opinion is of my religion, I don't care. If he thinks we're a bunch of tree hugging hippies or wannabe sorcerers, it doesn't matter to me. I'm secure enough in my religion that I can laugh it off. *shrugs*
Fritters: Christ - Believe - by Lizzaehfritters on December 2nd, 2007 09:37 pm (UTC)
It occurred to me why exactly I didn't want to see it. From everything I've heard, it sounds like he wrote the books out of hate. Narnia was completely different. He didn't write them because he hated all non-believers, whereas it sounds like this guy thinks every type of church, period, is evil and he hates them. Not to mention that if he thinks religion is bad and wrong, he's basically insulting the beliefs of approx. 80% of the planet. I have enough hate in my life and enough people insulting me that I don't need to pay for it. Not to mention I don't want to reward that hate with my money.

That definitely makes more sense to me, but I think I'd still like to read the series and read about the series before I go agreeing with you fully.

Hey, Your Mileage May Vary.

Which doesn't mean I'm not curious. I hear he's not so much anti-religion as anti-Organised, formal religion, and there are few religions as nonOrganised as the many forms of paganism. Again, what 'franchise' of pagan did he depict or invent? It's a rather scattered target to hit with either mudballs or praise... ad for that matter, other things about him seem to state he doesn't like much of anything spiritual, be it high doctrine or booga woo-woo... so why are pagans exempt (if they are) and which ones, and... endless Insatiable Curtiousity.
Frittersfritters on December 2nd, 2007 08:07 am (UTC)
Because from what I heard he DID specifically write it to prove that everyone should hate Jesus. And what it comes down to is Vote With Your Dollar. Which I am. If it gets good ratings I might see it for free sometime, but as I said, I'm voting with my money.

And if what you heard is wrong it's not a big deal because you just missed out on one movie of no consequence. However, if it were me I'd be interested to learn for myself instead of relying on hearsay. You're entitled to do what you want, and I'm not trying to challenge you. I enjoy good discussions/debates between friends, it just so happens that spirituality is a touchy subject for most and I hope you don't find me to be offensive.
Frittersfritters on December 2nd, 2007 09:38 pm (UTC)
No, I don't find you offensive.

As it turns out I'm almost as Libertarian as I am Christian so what it all burns down to is this Capitalist spends money on things she supports and doesn't spend it on things she wants less of in the world.

But I said it better in my other response...

I'm glad we're not un-friending each other over this. lol. :)
