Problems...
Yesterday my transmission went out. It will be 2000 dollars to fix it. School starts Monday. I still owe mom 2,600 for fixing this car and she can't loan me anymore.

I have no idea what to do and I'd elaborate on everything, (I was planning on it) but it would just be too depressing for you. Or for me. I'm not sure which.

Time to dump the car
find another used one, or see if there is a transmission you can pull from an identical car at a salvage yard. Trust me, unless its a really nice car worth at least 8k, you should probably dump it.

Re: Time to dump the car
How? I have 300 dollars, and that I should use to start paying off the 2600 in debt I am.

And how do you find someone willing to install a transmission from a salvage yard? That sounds like the closest I can afford to a solution.

I agree with the above. The car isn't worth that much...

But hard to deal with in a hurry. :(

At this point, I don't see how I'll ever get off disability. Even if I somehow was able to drag myself on the bus to college, everyone in this area asks if you have your own reliable transportation in job interviews. I'll never be hired now.

What kind of bad is it?
There are lots of those trannies in junkyards. I can ask around and find out if anyone I know can put it in cheap.

It needs a new one. That's all I know. And yeah, if you could find that out, it would rock. I do have 300 dollars from the gummint soon, in theory. But that's pretty much it.

As in, when you start up and shift into drive or reverse, what happens? Remember, I kept my last 3 cars running on diet supplements; the gray one needed a steady dose of tranny fluid/ oil thickener 50-50 mix to run at all... and it ran that way for years.

Or another idea: Wanna borrow my Mom's car? We're trying to figure out where to park it...

You are actually insured when you drive someone else's car :D they want to know about your primary vehicle because that's what you're driving the most of the time, but you are still covered when you're driving another car that's not your primary. It's just that the car isn't covered. But the hitting-other-people coverage goes with you, the driver. It's the damage-to-this-car coverage that stays with the car.

If postrophe can't get his Mom's car to you in time to start school on Monday, let me know by Sunday noontime and you can absolutely borrow my car for as long as you need. (I have another one, which sees far too little use and needs a battery but I have a gift card to pay for the battery and have just been being lazy about actually getting it, and I'm not going to be going many places that take driving to for a while anyway, and can easily take bus/ask friend for ride to the places that do.) Either you could Greyhound down and drive it back, or I could drive it up and Greyhound back. :D It would be extra cool if you could let me know by the end of the day tomorrow, cause then I could spend the weekend in LA taking care of some business, but I don't mind at all if you can't let me know until Sunday night/early Monday morning even. ^____^ You going to school is extremely important.

My car is a stick, though -- can you drive a stick? If not, and you're willing to learn, I can teach you if we have at least a whole day while it's light out.

I talked to progressive and they said IF her car is insured, yeah, I'm covered, but otherwise to tell them what it is and they'll do it.

And I can't actually drive a stick ^_^ but thanks SO much for offering, that's just huge of you. Postrophe's mom's car is probably close enough to walk if I was REALLY desperate and had a day to kill, so I should be able to get to it by Sunday evening, with a ride from Martin.

Can be arranged. It's on the street at the apartment; I just had to move it again to make sure it doesn't get mistaken for abandoned..
My only concern is I wanted to get it that AAA 100-point checkup (or howevem many points it is) to see if it needs any service for all the time it sat idle... but it started immediately and drove the fwy with no problems whe I took it up there last week.

I knew something would come up. You're a good person, and what goes around comes around. And it really is wonderful of your friends to offer you cars to use in your time of need.

I agree, your best bet for the long term would be to find a transmission in a junkyard, and get a mechanic to install it for you. Most good mechanics that I know of will install junkyard stuff, no problem, and I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same there.

Don't give up. You can do this.

The loaner car from postrophe has really given me the hope that maybe I can scrape the money for the transmission.

I really love that stupid useless car...
